First, I would like to compliment you on your excellent web site. I
am compiling information for a Hispanic month celebration at a govt. agency.
I saw information regarding the spanish language and how it had voted on
in the beginning of our country, (between spanish and english as the native
language of the US.), but now can't find it again. Could you direct me??

Dear Madame:
This web page on the late Senator is certainly an extraordinary effort on your part. I commend you for it.
As a New Mexican, it give me great pleasure that we have had some true champions like Senator Chavez that not only were a pride to Nuevo Mexico, but to la Raza in general.
Again, I enjoyed this page and wish you best regards in your future endeavors.

I have a radio show called the Latino Perspective, Monday throught friday where I address issues that are effecting our people from a latinos point of view.

Hi!
Your website is incredible. Thanks for contributing it and giving Hispanics another voice. I have a couple questions that perhaps you can help me answer.
I was wondering when latinos were first recognized as separate from "white" by the US and under what label? When was Hispanic first used as a category? If you know where I can find this out, please let me know.
Thank you.

(From
the U.S. census in New Mexico and Arizona, Hispanics were listed as "white"
during the 1800's. I have not studied or examined any other period of time.

Ms. Romero,
I want to express my sincere gratitude for all your work regarding Latino heroes. Its almost impossible to find enough sources with detailed information pertaining to Heroes from our own community. Its a difficult task trying to educate ourselves and others about pride when very little is known. I make a special effort to find any sources that can teach us about heroes that look like us. Children are always looking for role models. Its very important as parents and its our responsibility to educate them about Latino heroes. Heroes come from all walks of life. They are in our neighborhoods, churches, organizations, government, schools, sports, medical field, legal field and our own homes. In school, we are taught by history books where our heroes are rarely named or acknowledged. Sometimes all that is written is negative. We often feel the need to be connected and crave to belong. How are our children to know if we do not teach them? We need to teach pride. We need to encourage our families to retain their culture and language. Its great to know two languages.
Keep up the excellent work. Could you please provide a list of good books to read? What are your sources?
Mil gracias.

We have just been to Santiago and visited the magnificant bronze sculpture of Antonoio Maceo which is absolutely amazing for its size and artistry. We stayed at the Daiquiri hotel near Santiago at the site of the abandoned Daiquiri gold mines and the site of the famous Daiquiri beach - there are old relics from the Spanish american war at the hotel - a little monument with no explanation. The sun in hot the rum is cheap and the cubans are most gracious fun loving peolple you could holiday with - Only one brave american had seen the wisdom of being there and he was having a wonderful time. - drinks were $1 - but the pride of country by cubans was priceless. Please try to visi this historic spot - you will have an experience that few will understand.

Hello, I am a Ball State University student who, for an assignment, has to make an oral presentation in Spanish for a Spanish class. As is always customary with me, I wish to make my presentation one that will demonstrate another side to history. For a topic I chose, the Treaty of Hidalgo. I know from prior reading that this treaty was not upheld. I wish to present this negleted part of our US history. In researching this topic, I came across some information from an oral source that I can neither disprove or prove. The person whom I spoke with stated that as a secondary student in Mexico they were taught that Santa Anna had taken the money that was given to Mexico by the US for the sale of the land. Here is where I was hoping to get some assistance. Where could I locate more information about the historical events that took place in the Mexican government during and after the Treaty of Hidalgo? Most of the information I have been able to get pertains to the US. I would be most grateful if I could be pointed into the right direction.
Thank You, Carrie F. Wade

I would like to share a story with you and maybe the Veterans of the spanish community can see themselves or know of whom I speak. I was born in Fulda, Germany, and came to the United States when I was 9 Years. I was born in the year 1957. My father was station in Germany and met my mother. He left Germany in 1956. He enlisted in Carolina, Puerto Rico. If he enlisted it had to be around 1953. I have never met my father nor do I know his name, my mother has passed away and buried with her is the name of my father. Since learning of him at the age of 14 I have been looking for him for 26 years. I would just like to meet him. He was in the US Army. I am only wanting to meet him nothing more. I feel if the Vietnam children can be reunited with their fathers Why can't other children be united also. Please if their is anyone that can help me to locate him I would be grateful.

Subject: about your chronology
Date: Thu, 19 Jun 1997 18:26:11 -0700 From:
To: 1stbooks@neta.com
Sorry but I find descrepencies in you chronology. Not so much that facts are misrepresented you do a good job there! However you seem to mis the point that history and historical events occured during the time frame of 1696 to 1796. Don't deny that this time frame occurred. I realize the fact that your web page is about hispanic north americans and you are trying to bring legitimacy to us and our cause. But we must not deny that we were Mexicanos.Mexican citizens.!!!!! And many of us (most of us) are meztisos. Many of us Meztisos from the clan Mexica. Hardly any of us are Spaniards. Mostly we have ties to this hemisphere of thousands of years. BE PROUD OF THIS. PREACH IT. IT IS THE TRUTH. Admitably most of us are anaware of these facts. Or maybe we are aware but through disinformation, and recieving historical education from the USA government ( which I might add is not our own for the most part, maybe only one hundred years or so is , however it is not all that great and pleasant of a history) we are made to disregard it and speak in english, claim we are Spaniards, or just plain old Americans and enjoy all these riches of the north americans. I am also ashamed for you that you don't mention anything of the Mexican-American war. No time frame from that era either. Are you in denial. At a time when our forefathers were going through the struggle of a corrupt Mexican government the good ol' US of A decides to create scandal thus provoking a war with Mexico. What reason would a country have for provoking war with another country I ask? Usually the provoker sees an opportunity to gain something. This Something was our precious land., our souls, etc... I SAY!!!! Be proud that you have fought for your country (USA) I am certainly proud of you. But for your kids and your grandkids and countless of your future generations I say BE PROUD OF YOUR SELF!!!!!! Don't deny your history to please some country who want's to see all of us return across the border into mexico much like the encomenderos and thier esclavos los Mexicas did in 1690. I know that my ideas are radical. But the truth is always radical. And this is the truth as I know it. I am not in denial. I have deeply inbedded in my soul rememberences of countless gringos telling me "How awful it must be to be a spic". etc.... Countless discriminatory remarks said to me by these americanos meant only to hold me down. NO LONGER AM I IN DENIAL!!! I used to keep my opinions to my self. BUT now I am a professional in my work and I NO LONGER AM QUIET. Thus my e-mail address is in honor of the last great AZTEC KINGS el CUAOHTEMOC. Every thing is for my people!! Perhaps one day we will meet in person. I would give you the respect that as a human you deserve. But I will say to you again. DON'T DENY WHO YOU ARE. SO PLEASE INCLUDE IN YOUR WEB PAGE THESE DATES AND ACKNOWLEDGE THEM ALONG WITH THE REST OF WHAT HAPPENED TO US AS A PEOPLE IN THIS TIME . It Pains my eyes to see my people in a state of denial. It makes me write letters like this and it makes me SPEAK UP! Another thing. Please e-mail me back and respond to what i've written here. It would serve us both in that I can know what you are thinking and perhaps you can tell me if you are or already have included these important dates in your chronology.
