Senator Dennis Chávez

                                  Civil Rights Advocate

For three decades, Chavez was the federal government's most forceful
advocate of behalf of Hispanics and Native Americans.

His concern, however, was not limited to any single group. He used the powerful weapons of his office to battle discrimination of all kinds through means such as federal aid to schools, improved public health facilities and wider job opportunities.

He waged a 20 year fight for a Fair Employment Practices Act
to eliminate racial discrimination in the work place.

As he argued:  "Either we are all free, or we fail; democracy  must belong to all of us."

Education, Chávez insisted, was the best weapon against poverty and discrimination.

A newly-established Dennis Chávez Founation will collect and
organize material on the social and economic history in the twentieth
century of New Mexico and the southwest, as well
as award scholarships for continuing education in that field.
