Senator Dennis Chávez

           Civil Rights Advocate-Activist, Senator

The many honors bestowed upon "El Senator" include the dedication
in 1966 of the Chávez statue in the Capitol's Statuary Hall in Washington. Dennis is the only New Mexican to be so honored.

Dennis Chávez is the only New Mexican honored with a statue in the U.S. Capitol Building.

The statue's inscription reads in English, Spanish and Navajo:

"We have lost our voice; our voice is gone forever."

On April 3, 1991, the U.S. Postal Service recognized the senator with a
stamp issued in the Great American Series.  This stamp acknowledges
his lifelong contributions.

As Johnson stated in his eulogy, "Chávez was a man who recognized that there must be a champion for the least among us."
