Citation:  "Capture of flag of 19th Virginia regiment (C.S.A.)". His Medal was issued on December 1, 1864, and was one of seven 19th Massachusetts Infantry soldiers to be awarded the Medal of Honor.  The others were Edmund Rice, John G.B. Adams, Daniel J. Murphy, Benjamin F. Falls, Benjamin H. Jellison and Private John H. Robinson

He received the CMOH for his bravery when his regiment's attacked and repulsed portions of Pickett's Charge.  This occurred  the third day of the Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania July 3, 1863.

Joseph H. De Castro is Buried at Fairmount Cemetery, Newark, New Jersey, USA.
