Financed the American War of Independence, planned key battles of the Revolution. . . .

Exploration & Colonization

During the period of exploration & colonization (1492 to 1542), in one generation, approximately 300,000 Spaniards had emigrated to the New World

They established over 200 cities and towns throughout America.

From Exploring the West & Colonizing the western hemisphere; chartered the oceans, islands, criss crossing America by foot, raft, ship, & by horse, & in one generation Hispanics acquired more new territory than Rome conquered in five centuries . . . . . . . . 


1565 - St. Augustine, Florida established by Pedro Menendez de Aviles.

1566 - Juan Pardo explores sections of Georgia, tennessee and Alabama.

1566 -South Carolina & Virginia Areas, Spanish Santa Elena, founded in by Spain, present state of South Carolina & Virginia Areas

1565 - Manila Galleons, from New Spain, begin their voyages of commerce to the Philippines. Upon returning they pass the coastline to Acapulco.

1566 - When the conquistadors learned that the Spanish Crown was slowly centralizing decision-making and power, they feared that their privileges were threatened and revolted.

1570-72 - Father Segura establishes Mission in Chesapeake bay area (thats between New York City & our nations capitol Washington D.C.)

1580 - Rodriguez-Chamuscado, Espejo-Beltran expeditions to New Mexico

`1581- Chamuscado, Padre Rodriguez, and Espejo expeditions into New Mexico, Arizona and Texas.

1580 to 1640 - Horses introduced to the American Southwest. During this time Native Americans hunted buffalo by foot & when the horse was introduced by the Spanish, Native Americans hunted the buffalo by horse.

1590 - First attempt to colonize New Mexico by Gasparde Sosa.

1598 - Juan de Onate colonizing expedition establishes first Spanish capital at San Juan de los Caballeros. He leads the wagon train of settlers northward across deserts and plains. Onate's men wore polished armor. After many tribulations suffered by the colony, Spanish New Mexico was finally founded in 1598.

1595 Merchant/adventurer Sebastian Rodriguez Cermeno unsuccessfully explores the California coast for an acceptable port-of-call for the Manila Galleons.

1602 Sebastian Vizcaino, also in search of good harbor, discovers Monterey Bay. His discovery sets the scene for the settlement of the Alta California region.

1602 - Colony in New Mexico, San Gabriel del Yunque, soldiers and families abandoned the Colony in 1600 -but some families remained, and a few additional colonizing families arrived October 1602, some were the Bacas and the Montoyas. They resided at San Gabriel del Yunque prior to the founding of the Villa de Santa Fe in 1607.

1605 - April 16 New Mexico at El Morro, inscription left by Govenor Juan de Onate, the oldest European signature-artifact in the USA.

1608 - New Mexico made a Royal Province.

1610 -Gaspar Perez de Villagra publishes history of New Mexico

1610 - Palace of the Govenors Built in Sante Fe, New Mexico (still stands & in use!)

1610 - Pedro de Peralta established The Oldest Continuous Governing Body on the North America continent, Santa Fe, New Mexico. San Estevan Church at Acoma Pueblo constructed 1629.

1628 - Twelve soldiers, Nineteen Franciscans and twelve brothers, left Mexico Sept 4, 1628, Father Estevan de Perea with them, left for Rio Del Norte where the territory of New Mexico begins.
