Luis Valdez:
Was
born in Delano California to farm workers. by age five he was also working in the fields. He went
to San Jose College and received a BA in
English. He
completed his first full length play, The Shrunken Head of Pancho Villa about Mexican Americans trying to find
themselves in society - it won an Obie award. He
created a farm workers theater El Teatro Compesino as a means of dramatizing the workers plight
and
gain public support for their unionizing efforts. Later
he organized a cultural center, Centro
Campesino Cultural. He won
several awards - Zoot Suit was the first play to
appear on
Broadway written by a Chicano. He worked on the
production of La Bamba. He continues
to write a screenplay on Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. He produced the 18 minute video
based on the poem, I Am Joaquin.
