The only survivors of a four hundred man expedition under Panfilo Narvaez,they were shipwrecked off the coast of near Tampa Bay, Florida.
Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca , a nobleman, born at Jerez de la Frontera, near Cadiz, Spain. His grandfather was Pedro de Vera, the Spaniard who conquered the Grand Canary Island. Nunez Cabez de Vaca had friends in the royal court, he embarked with Narvaez as the kings treasurer and high sheriff of this expedition.
