Don Tomas Perez was a Civil War Union veteran, serving under
General Fountain with the 1st N.M. Infantry.

General Fountain married Don Tomas sister, Marianita Perez.

Don Tomas Perez and his bride, Lina Candelaria, made a trip
from Concho to Zuni, New Mexico and were married there by
a priest July 2, 1875.  The witness were Don Alejandro Peralta
and Maria De Jesus Baca.

in 1879, Govenor John A. Fremont appointed Don Tomas
Perez as a member of the newly created Apache County
Board of Supervisors. After the appointment, Don Tomas
and his family moved to St. Johns (San Juan).

He became County Sheriff, U.S. Marshal and a leading and
respected citizen.  "He was as fine a man as ever lived,"
wrote the historian Charles Banta in 1882."

From the St. Johns Herald, Dec. 18, 1890, "Understand
that Don Tomas Perez, ex-sheriff of this county and one
of the most hightly respected citizens, is confined to his
bed by a severe cold contracted in a recent trip to
Springerville (Valle Redondo)".

Again the St.Johns Herald, Aril 20, 1893:
"Don Tomas Perez died about 3 o'clock in the afternoon
on Tuesday last, after a long and suffering illness. Mr. Perez
was one of the earliest settlers of this part of the county, and
was known to almost every man, woman and child in this
county, and none knew him but to honor and respect him.

He leaves a wife and eight interesting children who have
heartfelt sypathy of the entire community in their
irreparable loss.
