Not the MOH? What was the Navy thinking? York didn't capture that many and received the Medal of Honor. I think an injustice has been committed.Don't civilian lives count? When I was in Nam they did.

Judy, Just want to commend you on your wonderful and informative page. One of the best I've come across to date. I grew up with many Hispanic"Heroes" in my hometown of Robstown,Tx, who gave their lives for our country during the Korean war. I was just a few months shy of going there myself when it ended. I went on to serve my country for the next 28 years until my retirement. During those years there were many Hispanic heroes whom althought not officially recognized, also served their country. The hispanic soldier has always answered the call to arms of their country. They are a proud, patroitic, and able soldier. I'm proud to consider myself one of them. I'm just ashamed of a government that turns its back on them when they are not needed.

Again, a great and wonderful page.

Keep up the great work. Lorenzo Longoria

I am asking for anyone's help in rectifying wrong information being sent out by the department of defense. i grew up with an older cousin named Gabriel Cardona Jr. who was killed in vietnam 1968.
Gabriel was a dark-skinned hispanic of Puerto Rican descent. to my surprise the DoD has him listed as Caucasian. I searched numerous sites covering vietnam veterans and they all have him listed the same way. i decided to search other hispanics and almost all are listed as Caucasian.

A couple are listed as negro.

Do you know of anyway to have this misinformation changed?

[footnote: if anyone has information on Hispanics who were listed as Caucasian or Negro/Black, please let us know. Hispanics are of all races, Hispanics are Caucasian, and other races, however, it is important to insure that Hispanic contributions are not forgotten, and no one will know what Hispanics have accomplished. I believe many if not the majority of persons think Hispanics only arrived "yesterday" here in the USA, or have not served our country the USA faithfully-this thinking is totally false and this type of thinking needs to be corrected. I went to school with Danny Gabaldon and I just heard from him. It has been 27 years since we have seen each other. I remember him talking about his Uncle Guy Gabaldon while we were growing up.

Thanks for the excellent web page. I remeber seeing "Hell to Eternity" when it came out. It was years later that I found out the hero was really a Mexican American. It finally made sense to me. I knew when I saw the movie that the authorities of those days would have never let a Japanese family raise a white orphan. That part of the movie always seemed phony. Now I know why they let them raise Guy. The authorities of the day would have considered them both as non white.

We wouldn't need Chicano studies if out history were told truthfully in the first place.

I must have watched the movie From here to Eternity a hundred times. I never knew he was Hispanic until today when I entered his name on the internet! I was very surprised!

If he were other than Hispanic he would have immediately received the Medal of Honor for his actions on Saipan.

Maybe one day he will. Also, the information you have on him doesn't state whether he is still living today. I also would have liked more information about his family. Thank you.

Mr.. Loving

I've been long intrested in the participation of mexican aircraft and pilots in WWII. The comments about Carlos Foustinos came as a big sorprise to me, since I didn't know of any 201st Squadron Fighter Ace. Do you have any idea where can I get more information about Carlos Foustinos. I can provide you with a lot more details about 201st Squadron. There was also a number of pilots flying for the RAF and even the Luftwaffe, but I think this is beyond the scope of your homepage. I am very pleased with your home page. Sadly, I think a recognition to the participation and sacrifice of these men has been long overdue and neglected by the US and Mexico.

It was a great pleasure viewing your website.

I couldn't help but be moved by the stories and pictures of the young hispanos who gave their youth and their lives to the defense of our country.

As a father of three children, I cherish the opportunity I have to raise them. It is an opportunity that many of these fallen heros never knew. I constantly remind my children of our heros's contributions and the ultimate price many of them paid so that we can live our lives as true Americans.

Thank you for providing such an inspiring website.

Do you have any information about an Army sergeant from Harlingen, Texas, who won a DSC in Vietnam that was upgraded to a Medal of Honor? His name is Raul Villarreal. I don't have any other information about him, but I can obtain more information. I was just wondering if you have any information about his DSC being upgraded.

Thank you,

Please accept my praise and admiration for your excellent work in preparing the subject web page and its downstream links. I write to make a trivial suggestion to your wording at one point. You say: With the exception of the 65th Infantry regiment from Puerto Rico, Hispanics were not in segregated units. You may wish to consider saying instead:

The US Army has never segregated Hispanic soldiers. Members of Puerto Rico's National Guard, of the present 65th USA Reserve Command, and of its ancestors, the 65th Infantry Regiment and the 1899 Puerto Rican Regiment US Volunteers, were residents of the island.

My father was with the 195th field artillery battalian in Italy. He was at the Rapido river, and volunteered to separate the wounded from the dead. He went from man to man with a stethoscope and placed a flag by the living. He said he'd never seen such bravery by the soldiers or stupidity by the officers that planned the offensive.

I don't know if this anecdote is of interest, but I just wanted to remember my dad today. Today would have been the 52nd anniversary of my his discharge from the army had he not died last October.

Dear Ms. Romero: Thanks to your recent response. I am planning to use your articles, "Hispanics in Americas Defense" and "Hispanic America USA: Medal of Honor Recipients." For this reason, I would like to obtain from you the suggested bibliographical citation to give you proper credit at the end of my article. The article is just for my company newsletter and will be entitled "Hispanic American contributions." Your articles are really nice, as is "On the Front Lines" by Michele A. Heller (Hispanic magazine, August 1993) and quite informative. Please answer at your convenience.

I am adding a link on my Dad's War web page (the new version of which I hope to roll out to the web in the next week) to your "unit1.htm" page.

There were quite a number of hispanic names among the men of my Dad's Company "B" of the 38th Armored Infantry Battalion, though it was a battalion of a mix probably typical of the general population.

Are you attempting to gather the names of all 250,000 to 500,000?

Good luck, Wesley Johnston

By the way, thanks for providing all the wonderful information on Hispanic war heroes. It has been a tremendous help to me in my research.

My father-in- law's name is Andrew Petock. General Chennault called him "Pete". If you have any information about any of the men and women who served in Kunming or addresses I could write I would be grateful.

You should also include the 76th division and also I believe it was the 81st division. The 101st airborn also had many Hispanics in its ranks and were among the victims of the Massacre of Malmedy. Any mention of Hispanics should also include a soldier named Longoria who received the Congressional Medal of Honor but was refused burial services in Texas. He was ultimately buried in Arlington, VA. There is a book I read many years ago (I believe it was called the Golden Eagles) about Hispanics who fought in WW2. You have a very nice site. It's important that others see the contributions and high proportion of deaths and honors we have received compared to our size in all our beloved countries wars.

Congratulations on your excellent work.

Date: Wed, 07 May 1997 13:11:14 -0700
To: 1stbooks@neta.com

I am conducting research for my book that examines racial problems within the military during the Vietnam war. As a former Marine during the early 70's I was aware of the concept of fragging from other veterans and am interested in actual accounts by latino vietnam vets. My research is related to police fragging practices and racial tensions within the police ranks, particularly between latinos and anglo officers, many of whom were vietnam veterans that carried over the fragging mentality.

Dear Ms. Romero,

I have really enjoyed visiting your Hispanic America USA Web pages. They have given me so much more insight and information I frankly did not know about regarding all the Latino contributions and sacrifices for this great nation of ours. Please keep up the good work!

The sections regarding Hero Street and Hispanic accomplishments during the War of Southern Independence (a.k.a. Civil War) were particularly interesting. The information reads as if it's straight out of a Hollywood script.

I would like to know what I would need to do in order to secure official permission from you to use the information you have on your Web pages regarding the Hispanic influence during the Civil War.

Please feel free to respond at the following e-mail address:

Thanks again for all your efforts and I hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,

Mr. R. Rivera
