The following is only a sampling, and reflect  the continual abuses American Hispanics have faced from the early 1800s  in California and the southwest.  Many of you in other parts of the U.S. may not be aware that American Hispanics were segregated from "Anglos" in the southwest and California in all aspects of living; that American Hispanic GIs returning from WWI, Europe, the Philippines, and Vietnam  encountered systematic discrimination in housing, jobs, medical care by Veterans Hospitals, politics; and the many laws adversely affecting Hispanics.

    • Santa Fe Ring: Loose-knit group of lawyers, businessmen, investors and land speculators who used the law to enrich themselves and to punish their competitors and others who opposed their interest. Members resided in New Mexico, Washington, D.C. and other states and included: William Mills, Franck Clancy, Charles Spiess, Republican Territorial Senator Pedro Perea, Stephen Elkins (Former law Catron Law Partner and Secretary of War), Stephen Dorsey, Henry L. Waldo, John Knaebel. O. D. Barrett, William Rynerson, John Riley, L. S. Twimble, Ralph Twitchell, Charles Gildersleeve (Chairman of the State Democratic Party), and Mariano Otero.

    • 2000 Daniel Aragón Ulibarrí, Ph.D., New Mexico states, "There has to be a reason why the U.S. Hispanic population has a dropout rate of 30%; 2.5 times the rate for Blacks and 3.5 times the rate of Anglos.  There has to be a reason why the dropout rate for Hispanic students is almost two times that of Anglo students. One would think that with our love of the New Mexican culture that New Mexico would be different. But, California, New York, and even Texas have lower dropout rates than New Mexico. True, the last  two years have seen real improvement. Hispanic dropout rates fell from 10.8% to 9.2% and Anglo dropout rates went from 5.9% to 4.9%.

    •

However, during this same period, the Hispanic dropout rate compared to Anglos has quietly  increased. From 1.83 in 1995-96, it has gone to 1.85 in 1996-97, and 1.88 in 1997-98. This may not seem like much, but it shows we’re not getting at the problem’s root.

The most recent study of Hispanic dropouts is more specific. According to the Hispanic Dropout Project, many Hispanics are pushed out of schools. “They attend schools with below-average physical conditions and educational resources, and often encounter personal prejudices and demeaning treatment from school personnel. Under these conditions, dropping out becomes a viable option rather than remaining in an institution where one is unwanted and held in disregard.”

      Bill of Rights

Hispanics from the southwest and California are unlike any other group in the U.S., including other Hispanics, and fall under the jursidication and authority of the United States in the same manner as Native Americans and Native Hawaiians in the states of

    • For the first time ever the U.S. is refusing citizens entrance fleeing from a Communist Government.  Every one from the previous Soviet Union and other communist countries were welcomed with open arms, but the doors are suddenly shut on Cubans who are fleeing the Castro Communist regime.

    • In his Living History Newsletters Rick Collins writes, " Most Americans are not aware of the role of Spain in the settling of the New World, nor are they  cognizant of the important contributions of Spain to the defeat of the British during the American Revolution. In his book, Entrada, Bernard Fontana suggests an underlying prejudice toward Hispanics as cause of part of that ignorance. Certainly the Leyenda Negra, or "Black Legend", so strongly touted by the Protestant governments of the Old World helped suppress Spain's contribution to American history. http://www.neta.com/~1stbooks/rick1.htm
