Clothing 1780
For one woman:
3 camisas (chemises)
3pr. of white poblano petticoats (naguas blancas poblanos)
Two pairs of petticoats: one of serge (sarga) and the other of baize
(bayeta),
and one underskirt faldallin)
2 varas (about 33”) of linen for jackets 2 pr. Brussels stockings 2
pr shoes (like moccasins) 2 rebozos
Rebozos are worn by all Spanish women in New Spain.
They should be of cotton, cotton and silk, or silk. Cotton worn by
commoners, silk by the wealthy. They are worn as a covering and adornment.
All Spanish women braid their hair.
A ribbon is worn at the end of the braid. Always wear a lace mantilla
or capa (mantle) (a shawl like cloth) when in church or worshipping. It
is sometimes used to keep off rain or cover the head in the cold.
Makeup: Flour was used to lighten the skin and a flour paste was worn
to protect the face from the sun. Powdered chalk was sometimes substituted.
Rouge was made from cows blood or alegria, a plant known as red cockscomb.
This makeup, while sounding terrible hid the small pox scars which many
carried.

Clothing for a soldier:
The regular uniform 1 mascada negra (black neckerchief from Spain)
1 shirt from Pontivi 1 shirt of cotton 2 pairs of underdrawers of Puebla
cotton (Pima cotton) 2 pairs of double thread wool stockings, country finished
2 prs. zapatos abotinados (buckled shoes)
Sonora stockings are footless, ending at the heels.
