This is a group of about 20 or more members, husbands and wives too. Our primary effort is to portray events that happened in the early years of California, under the Mexican rule, as the Bear Republic, and then Statehood. The period of time that we enjoy looking at is around 1840 to1853, more or less. We base our reenactments on the life of Joaquin Murietta during the gold rush period, he was/is a legend throughout California, and ran a very effective campaign against the non-Californios, and their attempt to take control.
These Californios had a very different form of dress, very colorful,
and roamed between the California's and Mexico. We attempt to dress in
their style as authentically as possible, including clothing that we research
and make ourselves. The guns we use are of that period of time. Our group
has performed in the northern California mining town of Coltervile, an
area that celebrates Joaquin Murietta days in September. We plan to go
again this year at the invitation of the town, which is like a living ghost
town. I'll send more information if you want. I might add, that we perform
at schools in an effort to bring awareness of our culture to youth.
