In a 1779 inspection of the Sonoran presidio of San Miguel de Horcasitas, Adj. Maj. Roque de Medina compiled service records for the officers and NCO's of the garrison. Among these was fifty seven year old second Sgt. Don Juan Maria Berdugo, who had served over thirty-two years in the frontier army, all at this same presidio. Medina noted that throughout his career, Sergeant Berdugo had conducted himself "with much valor", and to the great satisfaction of his commanders, of whom I am included. He has received many wounds, including five to the front, three of which the enemy inflicted on him in the month of April 1777.
